Detailed information

Characteristics

SSDs, or flash memory drives, have not yet reached the large capacities of traditional HDDs. Their undeniable advantage, however, is their high write and read speeds and multiply lower latency. The lifetime of SSDs is now practically equal to that of conventional HDDs, but the key value of DWPD (the amount of overwrites of the disk capacity during one day) must be chosen correctly.

Interface

When choosing a hard drive, you need to consider SATA, SAS, or NVMe drives. SATA and SAS drives are designed for both hard drives and SSDs and differ in theoretical transfer speed. NVMe drives are flash-only and as such achieve the highest read and write performance and also feature very low latency.

Speed and capacity

A key parameter for hard drives is the platter rotation speed, which for hard drives ranges between 5400 rpm - 15000 rpm. Which directly affects the speed of the drive and of course its price. Nowadays, solid state drives are increasingly being replaced by SSD solutions. SSDs are many times faster, and their price is starting to approach that of traditional hard drives. They also have a much lower access time, and there is no wear and tear on the flash memory during reading. NVMe has become the latest standard, which further enhances the quality of flash memory drives and is gradually being adopted by more and more hard drive manufacturers.
