Detailed information

Characteristics

SSDs, or disks with flash memory, do not yet reach such large capacities as classic HDDs. However, their indisputable advantage is high write and read speed and significantly lower latency. Today, the lifespan of an SSD is practically equal to that of classic hard drives, but the key value of DWPD (the number of disk capacity overwrites during one day) needs to be chosen correctly.

Interface

When choosing a hard drive, you need to consider the choice of SATA, SAS, or NVMe drives. SATA and SAS drives are designed for both hard drives and SSDs and differ in theoretical transfer speeds. NVMe drives are flash only and as such achieve the highest reading and writing values and are also characterized by very low latency.

Speed and capacity

The key parameter for hard drives is the speed of rotation of the platters, which for hard drives range between 5400 rpm – 15000rpm. Which directly affects the speed of the disk and, of course, its price. Nowadays, hard drives are increasingly being replaced by SSD solutions. SSDs are many times faster, and their price is starting to approach classic hard drives. They also have a much lower access time and there is no flash memory wear during reading. NVMe has become the latest standard, which further increases the quality of flash memory drives and is gradually being promoted by more and more hard drive manufacturers.
